Product Analytics for Interviews: Metric Design, Root Cause Analysis, and Scenario Frameworks
The complete framework for product analytics interview questions — DAU drops, metric trade-offs, experimentation critique, and business case analysis. Covers the metric hierarchy (north star / guardrails / diagnostics), the 5-step root cause investigation process, common scenario traps, and how to structure your answer in under 3 minutes.
What Product Analytics Questions Are Really Testing
Product analytics interview questions — "our DAU dropped 15%, what do you do?", "design a metric for feature X", "how would you evaluate this A/B test?" — are not SQL tests or statistics tests. They are structured thinking tests. The interviewer wants to see whether you can decompose ambiguous business problems into a clear, ordered investigation without going off on tangents.
Two failure modes that eliminate candidates instantly:
- Jumping to a hypothesis without checking data quality first. If the DAU drop is caused by a broken analytics pipeline, all your clever hypotheses are wasted. Every investigation starts with "is the signal real?"
- Proposing a single metric without a hierarchy. Any metric can be gamed or misinterpreted in isolation. Strong answers describe a primary metric, at least one guardrail, and the diagnostic signals that would distinguish success from coincidence.
